Kindergarten EnrichmentOur kindergarten (JK/SK) programs have been developed to ensure positive early experiences with school in order to create positive attitudes towards learning. Our goal is for the children to see themselves as learners, which is encouraged in an atmosphere of cooperation and belonging, and where a sense of feeling capable and courageous can grow. Opportunities are created for learning through inquiry and play, by participating in experiences designed for the development of literacy and for knowledge and skills in math and science. Our literacy program - known as KinderQ™ - has been developed by an Early Literacy specialist and follows the Balanced Literacy program that has been developed for the TDSB. Our math and science component also meets the TDSB expectations for SK. The activities in our program accommodate the changing needs and interests of the children, and will allow each child to have a chance to direct their learning towards their own interests. The daily schedule is set to ensure a respect for order and a sense of belonging to the group. It includes large and small group time and one-on-one time with the teacher. Programs Available: Two or Three Day Programs Our two day and three day KinderQ™ Enrichment programs are available at both our locations. The Two Day Program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the Three Day Program runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The programs focus on the development of literacy, critical thinking, comprehension, decision making and problem solving skills to develop resilient and optimistic thinking habits. The program also addresses the development of the child's emotional wellness, self-esteem and self-confidence as well as cooperative communication and conflict resolution skills development. Five Day Program Our five-day program is available mornings and afternoons at our Bedford Park campus only. The program includes three days (MWF) of the KinderQ™ Enrichment program which is our Balanced Literacy based program. The literacy portion of the 5 day option focuses on the development of literacy skills as described above under Two or Three Day Programs. The focus in the other two days (T, Th) is on math and science and meets the TDSB math and science expectations for SK. On "Test Tube Tuesdays" we explore measurement, graphing, problem solving and do fun experiments and arts and crafts based on the childrens' interests. On Thursdays we explore math concepts and numeracy including counting by 10's, 5's and 2's, subtraction, addition and problem solving concepts. The children learn about patterning, geometry, measurement and data management, etc. in a a fun and creative way. In addition to math and science, the Five Day Program incorporates Brain Gym® (www.braingym.org) and yoga as a daily exercise program. Optional Programs: Lunch Program We offer a bring-your-own lunch program either before or after the Kindergarten program. This may make it easier on parents getting children to and from other schools. Drop-In Program The Drop-In program provides a place for children to play supervised for a few hours (without a caregiver). There is an opportunity for gross motor, crafts and imaginative play as well as an afternoon snack. It runs daily between 12:45p.m. and 2:45 p.m. at our Bedford Park location and between 12:50 p.m. and 3 p.m. at our Castlefield location with the exception of school holidays and designated P.D. days. Options for Blessed Sacrament Students Due to the close proximity of Blessed Sacrament School we offer a Pick-up & Drop-off service for Kindergarten students, as well as an After-school club for students needing care after 3:10 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. |
